How to become a will writer — a real plan, not a sales pitch
Most "how to become a will writer" guides skip the awkward middle bit — how do you actually find out if this career is for you, before spending £3,000? Here's the four-phase plan we use with everyone, designed so you can dip your toe in first and only commit when you're sure.
500+ trained · No degree needed · Stage-by-stage commitment
The plan
Four phases. Try first, commit later.
The whole route is built so the first two phases are free and risk-free. You only commit money when you and we both agree the coached programme is the right next step. No upfront bet, no thousands at risk.
Take the free course
Six modules covering wills, LPAs, trusts and WILLO drafting software. The same legal foundation other UK providers charge £600–£1,000 for. Entirely self-paced — go faster if you have time, slower if you don't.
By the end you know whether estate planning is genuinely something you want to do — and you've learned more about wills, LPAs and trusts than 95% of the public ever will.
Free 20-minute Zoom call with our friendly team
After the free course, we sit down with you on Zoom. We'll plan out your business start-up together, talk through what support you actually need, and decide together whether the coached programme is the right next step.
Both of you are clear on whether to progress. We won't put someone into the coached programme if we don't think they can do it — better honest now than a £700 mistake later.
The coached programme
Six stages, paid stage by stage: Business Set Up → Taking Instruction → LPA Master Class → Trust Master Class → Grow Your Business → WILLO With Ease. 1-to-1 calls with our dedicated trainers, real role-play sessions, video demos, and an extended launch plan. WILLO software included throughout.
A real, registered estate planning business taking real clients. Most students take their first paid will in month 2 (£200), add LPAs in month 3 (£600+), and start selling trusts in month 4 (£600–£1,200).
Running your own practice
Once you finish the coached programme, you continue with WILLO at £99/mo for ongoing drafting and admin. Loose connection to the community for advanced topics — inheritance tax planning, business property relief, IFA partnerships — but no obligation.
Sustainable income. Full-time graduates typically earn £40k–£60k+ in their first year. Two trust clients per quarter alone covers the entire year-one investment.
Phases 1 and 2 are completely free with no obligation. Even Phase 3 is paid stage by stage rather than upfront — your worst-case exposure is one stage, not the whole programme. Built that way deliberately.
Myths vs reality
The four things people get wrong
We hear the same misconceptions on every initial call. Quick clear-up so you can decide based on actual facts.
"You need a law degree"
Will writing is unregulated in England & Wales. What matters is proper, structured training — not academic credentials. None of our planners came in with a law degree.
"It takes years to qualify"
Free course in 2–4 weeks. Coached programme launches your business in 4 months. Most students take their first paid will in month 2 of the coached programme.
"Training costs thousands upfront"
The legal training is free. The coached programme is £700 (or £199/mo × 4) — paid stage by stage. SWW and IPW typically charge £600–£1,000 upfront for the same legal content, before any business training is even on the table.
"You need expensive professional insurance"
Professional indemnity is around £300–£500/year and we walk you through who to use and how much cover to take. It's a line item, not a barrier.
Who actually does this
Who becomes a will writer?
Our 500+ graduates come from a mix of backgrounds — but they tend to fall into one of these six camps. See yourself in any of them?
Career-changers
Office workers, teachers, sales people. You want a real second career, not another £3k gamble that ends in a certificate.
Made redundant
A redundancy package gives you the cushion to retrain. Estate planning gives you the skill that pays you back.
Parents and carers
Self-employed, run from home, fits around school runs and family. Two clients a week is £30k+/year.
Mortgage advisors & IFAs
You're already with the right clients. Add wills, LPAs and trusts to every conversation instead of passing them on for £50.
Semi-retired professionals
A meaningful second act. The work suits experienced people — clients trust someone who's been around the block.
Career-on-low-commission planners
You're doing the work, another company keeps half the fee. Time to keep 100% — without rip-and-replace.
Phase 1 starts now.
The free course is the only commitment we ask you to make today — and it isn't really a commitment, because there's nothing to pay and nothing to cancel. Take 2–4 weeks. Find out if estate planning is for you. The next phase is a conversation, not a contract.
